Who Are Friends of the Detroit River?
More than 20 years, a group of concerned citizens fought to prevent the establishment of a deep injection well that would’ve wreaked havoc on the local wildlife and habitat. Their successful block of this deep injection well was just the first of many sustainability projects this group would undertake as the Friends of the Detroit River group.
Today, they’re still working diligently to preserve and improve the natural parts of the area. They’re constantly working on existing projects, like the Sugar Island Habitat Restoration project and the Blue Heron Lagoon project, as well as looking for new projects to take on.
The Benefits of Becoming a Member
Get in on their mission of “ever improving quality of life for people, plants and animals in southeast Michigan and southwest Ontario” by becoming a member. They strongly prioritize inclusion so everyone can benefit from being a member, which is why they offer a variety of memberships including:
- Individual memberships
- Discounted student & senior memberships
- Discounted household/family memberships
- Lifetime memberships
- River guardian memberships
No matter which membership you go with, you’ll get all the benefits. You’ll be able to fish, kayak, birdwatch, and more on and near the Detroit River. At the same time, you’re enjoying the natural lands that this organization has fought so hard to preserve, your membership dues will also be fueling their fire so they can keep doing what they do best.
