Development of the Check Engine Light

Older vehicles had a light that would illuminate if there was trouble with the engine. They are not as advanced as today’s indicators but could warn the driver that there was a problem. Often, they come on for charging system issues, low oil pressure, or overheating. They were not as advanced as today’s indicators. Today’s version is known as the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL). They came into use in the mid-1980s when computerized engine controls were added to vehicles. This self-diagnosis feature can save you from getting stranded on the road.

Odometer Triggers

Older vehicles from the mid-2000s may have a check engine light that will come on based on the odometer reading. Some automakers used this feature to remind consumers to get certain maintenance procedures done. Several automakers did this. Several Mazda models check engine light was set to come on when the odometer hit 80,000 miles. The light would remain lit until the vehicle was serviced. Volvo used a light called “Lambda”.
