Why should I have it done?

Replacing your engine air filter is important, relatively easy, will help to ensure proper fuel burning, and can dramatically prologue the life of your engine. In high-performance vehicles, having a clean air filter is even more important due to tighter mechanical tolerances within the internal workings of the engine and the high-pressure rates of fluids, fuels, and gases. The average driver should have the engine air filter replaced about every 5000 miles.

What happens if I don't do it now?

The engine air filter is one of your engine's final defenses against airborne dust, dirt, and debris before these particles reach the combustion cylinder. This filter, when clean and undamaged, permits only clean air to flow into the engine. It does this with its special accordion-like folded design, which presents the maximum surface area to the incoming air to be filtered. Over a period of use, the filter may become heavily impregnated with unwanted material to the point that it can no longer seize incoming debris and prevent it from entering the engine. Exposure to extremes of temperature and vibration can also warp the filter, causing it to pull away from one or more of the edges of the space that it is meant to guard. A dirty engine air filter will reduce your vehicle's fuel economy, and can potentially lead to a critical engine clog which may call for major repairs.
