Brake Pad & Rotor Inspections Service
Brake Pad and Rotor Inspections Service
Most car owners don't realize they can save themselves a lot of money if they have their brake pads and rotors inspected regularly. It helps to understand the interaction of the brake pedal with the three major moving parts of the brake system: the brake rotors, pads, and calipers. The brake pads are attached to the calipers, a clamp-like component that closes when the driver steps on the brake pedal, squeezing the pads into the rotor. For its part, the rotor, which is the disc that gives disc brakes its name, is synchronized with the wheels, so that when the caliper/pad duo grabs hold of it, it slows the rotation of the wheel and depending on the situation, brings the vehicle to a halt. Once you understand this, it's actually quite simple to see how both rotors and pads wear out with usage.
Benefits of Brake Pads and Rotor Inspections
The brake pads wear out much quicker than the rotors. Regularly scheduling brake pad and rotor inspections will allow the car owner to monitor their condition so he/she can have the pads replaced when they get worn down, a much easier (read cheaper) repair than waiting for the rotor to become worn too. Neglecting to have inspections usually means that by the time the problem is discovered, the rotors are too shot to be machined back to an optimum condition, and must be replaced along with the pads. Cost is not the only consideration here. More importantly, the slowing/stopping capacity of the car has been impacted at this point, compromising the safety of the car.
Longevity Factors
How long brake pads and rotors last depends on several things:
- The owner's driving style, whether he or she rides the brakes or waits until the last minute to apply the brake, requiring a lot of hard stops.
- The road conditions (not always ideal here in the metro Detroit area)
- The weather
- The quality of the parts (cheaper pads typically don't last as long as better quality ones)
We can't do much about the first three factors here at Feldman Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram but we can promise to partner with drivers in keeping an eye on their brakes and whether a brake pad and rotor inspection reveals only the pads need replacing, or the rotors too, we will use only the highest quality OEM parts.
